"Best tour of our cruise"

"Eight of us booked the 5 hour tour while we were visiting on a cruise. It was our best tour with the best guide... ...The town is beautiful, and the history is interesting and sad at times, but that of resilient people... ...We were back to the ship with an hour to spare which is how we like it. The day was wonderful. Chris was amazing. As we walked by the cruise groups with 50 people, we kept saying…. This was the way to go."

Kristjan-Jaak Tammsaar

Founder / Lead guide

After a decade of guiding for others, I realized the only way to offer truly authentic, personalized tours, without having to cut any corners, was to do it my way. Welcome to Tallinn InSight.

As a photographer, I've been fortunate to travel far and wide, from remote Himalayan villages to bustling Middle Eastern bazaars. And everywhere I’ve found the same universal welcome, warmth, and curiosity from locals eager to share their own lives and dreams.

That's the same spirit of genuine connection that fuels my every tour. Tallinn InSight is not about growing and scaling — it's about connecting and sharing, because that's what keeps me coming back every day.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT? WHERE? WHY?

Q: What sets your tours apart?

Glad you asked! Tallinn InSight offers fully private guided tours in both Tallinn and Estonia that are adapted in real time to each guest's interests, pace, and communication style. We know our stories inside out, but we never blindly follow a script. Every tour is personal, candid, and simply human. Expect nuanced insight, spontaneous humour, honest perspectives, and the freedom to take detours when something sparks your curiosity. Travel has shaped me profoundly, thanks to the people across the world who've opened countless doors for me: both literally, to their homes, and metaphorically, to new cultures and ideas. That's why I feel a genuine responsibility to shape Tallinn InSight to be the best Estonian ambassador it can be in its own small and direct way. Not just showing you the pretty side, but sharing candid, balanced, and when necessary, also difficult or uncomfortable stories. You'll always get accurate context on our tours, without being prescribed what to think. We give you the full picture so that you can draw your own conclusions.

Q: How private are the tours — will we be joined by others?

Private means private with us, no euphemisms or hidden catch here. We focus exclusively on private tours, and intentionally so. That allows us to keep your experience uncompromisingly personal, flexible, and honest. It's you, your spouse, family, or friends, and our guide with his or her undivided attention on you, your interests, and your pace. There is no chance you will ever be unexpectedly merged with strangers. That said, you're of course welcome to form and bring your own group, be it friends, family, colleagues, or fellow travellers met on the way, and book together to share costs. As long as you share the same wavelength, we're happy to take you cruising together. :)

Q: Are your tours suitable for first-time visitors? Families? Mixed age groups?

Absolutely! We assume zero prior knowledge and meet you exactly where you are, be it fresh off the boat or with a degree in Baltic politics, history, or culture under your belt. Our aim is for you to always leave us with a deeper, holistic, and more nuanced understanding of what Estonia and Estonians are about, regardless of the level of information you started with. Private tours also work very well both for families and mixed-age dynamics because we can adapt pace, focus, and storytelling style to different ages. That said, our tours are conversation-driven and content-rich rather than entertainment-first. Curious teenagers usually thrive; very young children may enjoy parts of the experience, but might not be the primary audience we design around unless you ask us to. While our job is to give you the best guided tour experience you could imagine having in Estonia, our mission is to really make you understand the big picture, connect dots, and empathize with our tiny corner of the world. We're always happy to explore in depth whichever topics may spark your curiosity, but as mentioned, we don’t assume prior expertise, and will provide exactly as much context as you want or need. And while families and mixed age groups are absolutely welcome, the experience is best when it's tailored consciously rather than assumed. Therefore, please let us know the ages, interests, and energy levels in advance if the group makeup is quite eclectic, so we can try and shape the route and rhythm accordingly, including breaks, snacks, or shorter walking stretches where needed.

Q: How flexible are the tours — can we adjust, skip, or add stops?

Absolutely. That's the whole point and the beauty of private tours: flexibility, which means we can change direction the moment your curiosity or energy does. Your interests, pace, and priorities shape the experience, both before we start and as the tour unfolds. If something grabs your attention, we can slow down. If a stop doesn't resonate, we can move on. Detours and changes of focus are not interruptions; they're often where the best moments happen. If any adjustment could affect timing, transport, or costs, we'll always be clear and upfront before proceeding. Small tweaks, spontaneous stops, or running slightly over time are usually no issue at all. What matters most is that the flow feels right and we're all enjoying the company and the conversation. In short: the tour adapts to you, not the other way around.

Q: How physically demanding are the tours? How about low mobility or wheelchair-access?

Our tours are generally moderate in physical demand, but the pace is always adjusted to you, not the clock. Because all tours are private, there's no pressure to "keep up" with a group. We move at a rhythm that feels comfortable to you, with breaks when needed. Tallinn's Old Town does include cobblestones, some sloping streets, and occasional stairs. If you let us know in advance, we can design gentler routes, minimize elevation changes, or plan wheelchair-accessible alternatives where possible. On combined driving-and-walking tours, we can also further reduce the ratio of walking and show you more directly from the vehicle itself, with short, manageable stops instead. Bottom line: comfort, safety, and enjoyment always come first, and the tour adapts to you.

Q: What tours do you offer? Walking? Driving? Transfer?

All of the above, and in combination. At Tallinn InSight, we offer walking tours, combined walking-and-driving city tours, half-day and full-day trips across Estonia, and scenic transfer tours wherever you might need to commute, built to your exact schedule and interests. All standard tours are listed on the website, with more on the way, but flexibility is built into everything. Want to customize, combine routes, head out on a bicycle, or try something completely unconventional? Just ask. Say, you feel like exploring Tallinn while getting your regular run in? No problems. We're game for any distance, around the clock, up to a half-marathon. A full marathon distance can be arranged, but we might want to request a month of extra prep time. :)

Q: How do I book? What if I need to cancel or change?

We keep booking as simple and transparent as possible. Book in minutes, cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before your tour, and we'll still always try to accommodate last-minute changes. For standard tours, simply select your preferred date and time in our online booking calendar, submit your details, and pay securely to have your tour fully locked in and confirmed within minutes. In case your ideal date or time does not show availability in the booking calendar itself, just drop us a quick message, whether via WhatsApp, contact form, or email, and we'll do our best to see if we can still find you a guide for your preferred time. You'll usually hear back within a few hours. If we can confirm availability, we'll send you a personalized payment link to finish your booking. We accept Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Revolut, N26, and Estonian bank links through our payment operator's secure portal, whichever is more convenient for you. For any custom tours or one-off ideas, just send us your wishlist and preferences. We'll reply within 24 hours with concrete options and, once we have settled on an overall plan, a clear quote. Plans change, especially while travelling, and we get that. You can cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before your tour, no questions asked. We'll always try to be flexible and accommodate any necessary changes as late as possible, but cancellations within 48 hours may not qualify for a full refund due to our own preparatory expenses and advance reservations. Find full details clearly listed in our Booking & Cancellation Policy in the footer of the page.

Q: What is the tone of the tour — formal or casual?

Professional in content, casual in tone. Expect informed and compelling storytelling delivered in a relaxed, conversational way — anything but a dry lecture. Think spending time with a local friend who knows Tallinn and Estonia inside out, plus candid context and honest pointers on what's genuinely worth your time (and perhaps more importantly, which tourist traps to avoid). You're absolutely welcome to ask about anything that interests you, from personal matters to politics, religion, you name it. Questions are genuinely encouraged, and no topic is off-limits if approached with open-minded curiosity.

Q: Is it safe to travel to Estonia right now? Is it safe for solo female and LGBTQ+ travellers?

Yes. Estonia is one of the safest countries in Europe and a stable, long-standing EU and NATO member. Tallinn, meanwhile, is a calm, quiet, and well-organized capital with very low violent crime, and it consistently ranks high for everyday safety. As a local, there are very few places in Estonia, if any, where I'd feel unsafe or hesitate to go on my own, day or night. Solo travellers regularly comment on how comfortable and secure they feel here, and female travellers in particular often note how rare cat-calling or unwanted attention is. Tallinn is also broadly LGBTQ+-friendly and low-key tolerant in daily life. People tend to mind their own business, which in practice goes a long way. Yes, of course, there is the large white elephant in the room that may have inspired the question in the first place: the authoritarian mob state run by an aging dictator across our eastern border. But the Russian threat did not suddenly appear as a surprise to any of its European neighbours, which have consistently ranked as NATO's top defense spenders relative to GDP. That threat is not taken lightly here either. Estonia has been preparing for decades, not months: we are a committed NATO ally, and have maintained mandatory military service since 1991, alongside a nationwide voluntary paramilitary defense league. The point isn't bravado, it's preparedness. Security and threat mitigation are treated seriously across the entire Baltic Sea region, precisely so that everyday life remains calm and boring. As a visitor, you'll experience Estonia as it actually is: peaceful, orderly, and safe to explore at your own pace, whether you are alone or with others.

Q: Your company is new — what’s your experience?

Whereas the Tallinn InSight brand may be new, the experience behind it is certainly not. I've spent over a decade personally guiding thousands of travellers in Estonia and abroad, learning what works, what doesn't, and what actually makes a tour memorable. While it's not exactly in the Estonian character to talk up personal achievements, my track record does speak for itself, with consistently strong feedback, reviews, and top ratings across leading local tour companies. That experience is what Tallinn InSight is built on. Similarly, our experienced guides come with their own years of accumulated guiding practice, both in Estonia and abroad. No one among us does what we do as just a job. We all genuinely love the opportunity to show and tell you what Estonia is really about. And we appreciate real conversation and real contact. I take your trust seriously, and I do everything I can to make your time with us one of the highlights of your trip.

Q: Who exactly will be our guide?

Often it's me, hi! I'm Kristjan, Tallinn InSight's founder and head guide, a native Estonian born and raised in Tallinn, but with a big-picture perspective that years of living abroad can bring. I personally lead as many tours as I can, not because I have to, but because I genuinely enjoy the job, the people, and the conversations it brings. And if it's not me, it's one of my trusted colleagues who all embody the same mixture of qualities: personable, knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic about sharing Estonia with you. Every single one of our guides is hand-picked and typically brings years of guiding experience. They all stand above the pack with their unique combination of emotional intelligence, intellectual curiosity, sharp wit, and solid education. For highly specialized and custom deep-dive tours, we may further bring in an external expert to ensure the right level of insight, be it an art historian, an activist, or a local politician, whatever the situation calls for. Either way, you'll always know you'll be guided by one of our MVPs. We don't do any second-tier or back-bench roster. :)

Q: Are your tours suitable for VIP, MICE & B2B clients?

Yes, and this is something we do regularly. We guide high-level political delegations, conference guests, and business investors exploring Estonia, often on tight schedules and with very specific expectations. From the first idea to the final detail, we can design every experience around your exact needs and levels of discretion. I lead most VIP and business tours personally, drawing on my decade of professional guiding, extensive personal & professional travel, two postgraduate degrees, geopolitical awareness, and a genuine interest in big-picture conversations. I’m comfortable finding common ground, whether your guests are a reserved political delegation from Tokyo or a straight-shooting entrepreneur from New York. If discretion, precision, substance, and emotional intelligence matter, you’re in safe hands.

Can you accommodate special needs, sensory sensitivities, dietary restrictions, pets?

In most cases, yes, happily. Most itineraries can be adapted for mobility considerations, accessibility needs, dietary restrictions, sensory sensitivities, and travelling with pets, as long as we know in advance. A quick heads-up allows us to plan routes, transport, timing, logistics, or the narrative delivery style to properly suit your exact needs. If you or any of your travel companions are on the autism spectrum or simply have specific sensory sensitivities, you can feel safe letting us know. In general, it's quite easy to keep distance from the crowds, manage ambient noise levels, or avoid any other overt stimulation, even in Tallinn, due to its relatively small population and Estonians' general appreciation for quiet and respect for personal space. Pet-friendly? Absolutely. We've grown up with plenty of furry companions ourselves. If your travel companion happens to weigh (literally) over a ton, though, please let us know in advance — navigating full-grown elephants through downtown during working hours does involve a bit of extra planning. In short, feel free to share candidly what you need and what helps you, and if at all possible, we'll try to make it happen. Travelling is one of the true joys of life and should be inclusive of everyone.
